How to Plan Spiti Vallley Trip in Winters

If Spiti Valley in summers will treat you with glacial lakes and green landscapes, the winters will introduce you to the frozen beauty of the valley. With cold days and colder nights, you will still appreciate the rustic landscapes for what they are; a true marvel on earth. The whole valley is like a snow blanket at this time of the year, making it colder but also even more stunning. But before you get lost in the dreams of a white paradise, it’s important that you are aware of what it’s like to visit the Spiti Valley in winters and what all you need to prepare yourself for.

Only Dry Pits

Due to harsh weather conditions, pipe water freezes in winter Spiti Valley during this time. Therefore, toilets are locked for the season and only dry pits are used. Dry pits also don’t have any water available. Washrooms will also be sans water, so for people who can’t live without taking a bath every day you might want to sit this one out.

Basic Homestays

Hotels and guest houses are shut for the winters in Spiti Valley due to lack of customers and harsh weather conditions. You will only get accommodation in homestays where you will have to adjust with the locals. There will be no room service, filter water bottles or mechanics at such places. You will have to be prepared for anything and everything.

Road Blockages

Roads in Spiti Valley can close for a few days up to several weeks and months. Not only could this blockage derail your Spiti Valley trip but also have you stuck in the valley for longer than you planned. Although, a month is rare but it has happened before. So, just in case keep a few days spare for any misgivings if you’re planning on visiting Spiti valley in winters.

Slippery Roads

If a road trip to Spiti Valley is what you’ve planned for this winter, then be ready to encounter a lot of snow and ice on the roads. This will make the roads slippery and it will be difficult for anybody with less experience to drive on such a risky route. One hard brake could lead to a crash with no help in sight. So, only drive yourself if you’re confident that you can do it.

Empty Roads

Since, life is so difficult in the Spiti Valley in winters; people usually skip a Spiti Valley tour if they want to take a trip in the winter season. With fewer tourists around, any hope of shared vehicles of public transports is gone. Even the buses working in this season will stop at any giving point if the conductor feels there is a danger point ahead.

No Electricity

From a couple of days to weeks and even months, electricity is not available in these areas as the electrical poles either get swayed or get buried in the snow. So, remember to carry an ample number of batteries with you. Keep these batteries in a safe and warm place as they will also get frozen and exhaust themselves otherwise. This goes for your phones as well.

No Mobile Signals

Just like electricity, even mobile signals can be out for a few weeks or months. So, whenever you get the chance, contact your friends and family members and assure them of your safety. During your trip to Spiti Valley in this season, take any chance you can get; WIFI in a bank or a hotel running a generator etc. Also, it is better to contact through WhatsApp than to hope for a phone call.

Minimum Medical Help

Strive to carry your own medical supplies; basic and on-going to last you a long time. Spiti Valley is low on medical facilities and even if there is a medical emergency, a helicopter has to be used to drop the patient off to the nearest major help that is Shimla. If the helicopter will actually be available or be able to fly off in these terrible weather conditions is still to be questioned.

Less Places to Visit

Most tourist destinations are closed in winters due to blockage of road. Tourist villages like Dhangkar, Lhalung, Demul, Langza, and Lhalung are all inaccessible to tourists. So, the numbers of places to visit in Spiti Valley in winters are less in numbers. Some of them can be reached on foot but don’t count on it. Ki-Kibber is a surety though as the roads leading up to it are always open.

Trekking and Some more of it

Since, most of the tourist destinations in Spiti Valley are closed for winters due to road blockage, a lot of tourists prefer walking to these destinations if possible. Yet, don’t take a solo backpacking trip to the villages especially those on higher altitude as there is always the risk of slipping on these icy roads. Take a tour guide or a local villager who knows how to navigate this route.

A Life-Changing Trip

Even with all these tough situations to deal with, Spiti Valley in winters is still one of the greatest decisions you will make in your life. The locals there are full of warmth and will make the stay for you as hospitable as possible. You will also realize what a challenge it is to live in such harsh conditions and your life at home will seem much easier and pleasant after this trip.

We hope this list helped get more perspective in the kind of trip you will have and the all the things you need to prepare for if you want to visit the Spiti Valley. Even though trip to Spiti Valley is a great idea for you next winters, a bike trip to Spiti Valley might not be the greatest option for people with less tolerance for cold. Why Should Kedarkantha Be Your Best Winter Trek?

Trekking can be such an eye-opening experience for someone trying it for the first time. That feeling of finally reaching the top, that vibe of the cold mountain air or that experience of making new friends along the way. The whole thing really teaches us something about going on adventures and trying new things. Also, the added fun of discovering new places and understanding new cultures really adds more the experience. But deciding your first can be quite the difficult task. Especially if you want to go in winters selecting a place can be tough due to the problems snowfall brings with it.

So, we are here to tell everything about why, how and to where your first winter trek should be. Kedarkantha trek should be your first winter trek. It is situated in the Himalayas and is one of the most popular and easy treks in Uttarakhand. Starting from a village called Sankri aka the base camp of the Kedarkantha Trek; this trek will take you across various natural enigmas before you reach your destination at the top of the Kedarkantha peak. Snow-capped peaks, frozen lakes and a variety of flora and fauna will greet you at every step of the way, making your journey beautiful and memorable. Every little trail of Kedarkatha is something to write home about. But even apart fom that here are the major reasons why you should choose the Kedarkantha trek as your first winter trek.

· Kedarkantha is known for being one of the easiest treks in India. The reason being you are only expected to trek about 4 hours every day, leaving the rest of your time free. You can take rest and discover the place around you in this time or simply eat and spend time with fellow travelers. The campsites will not only give you a beautiful view of the mountains, you can also start a bonfire and play games and spend your time leisurely. Standing at a height of 12,500 ft, this trek might sound like a lot, but due to how slowly you’ll be going about it; it won’t feel tedious or tiring.

· If driving though the mountains is one of your dreams but the idea itself scares you, Kedarkantha can be a great first trial. It is beautiful to look at and the path is quite clear making the journey easier. You will also cross various popular places like Mussoorie, Nowgaon, Purola, Mori and Naitwar along the way. Driving through the Himalayas, you will see the striking greenery on one side and the river of tons on the other. With a view like that and your favorite songs playing in the background, you can finally tick this one thing off your bucket list.

· What makes the Kedarkantha trekking trip so different from the other treks is the fact that it’s a summit climb. Which means that unlike other treks that end on a random mountain, the Kedarkantha trek actually ends on the Kedarkanthapeak making the journey taken worthwhile. As you will take a turn standing on the peak, you will notice the snow-capped mountains on every single side. The feeling of finally completing the journey and reaching to the top will only add to the whole experience. You can simply sit on the top of the world and enjoy the view before starting the descend.

· If we talk about the Kedarkantha campsites they are a whole other topic in itself. None of the other treks offer the kind of variety or beauty that Kedarkantha trek does when it comes to campsites. Unlike other treks, these camping options are proper resting places instead of just stopping wherever you find some space. One of them is the Juda Ka Talab campsite which is located next to the popular place. Surrounded by walnut and pine trees, you can enjoy the wonders of the nature all around. Since the lake is frozen at this point of the year, you can even walk on it after checking if its strong enough. On the other hand, there is also Hargaon campsite, a meadow giving you an open glimpse into the top of Kedarkantha; the Kedarkantha peak.

· As you are travelling, you will realise that every little place you cross during this trek has a religious connotation and an interesting story behind it. While nobody expects you to believe in them, just the fact that there’s a story behind it makes the place more meaningful and interesting to look at. Like the Kedarkantha temple that you’ll see standing on the peak was built by Lord Shiva when he wanted a peaceful place to meditate. It is also believed that the temple was only half-built because some villagers passing by interrupted his meditation. Since the temple was only built up to his neck, the place came to be known as Kedarkantha. The Juda Ka Talab Lake was formed when a droplet from Lord Shiva’s hair fell onto the Earth.

· Several Himalayan Peaks such as Black Peak, Swargarohini peaks, Bandarponch, Gangotri ranges, and Draupadi ka Danda are visible while you trek you way up to the Kedarkantha peak. With an altitude of 6,387 m, Black Peak is the highest peak in Garhwal Himalayas and you might not visit, but just looking at it will give you a sense of elation. These snow-covered peaks are beautiful to look at and every single one is a marvel in itself. The forests, the lake, the various trails and the snow-covered land will all keep you wide eyed during your journey. Of course the sunrise and sunsets from the top are a marvelous view in itself. And the night sky at the end of the day will have you sleeping with a smile on your face.

If you’re travelling in winters don’t forget to pack essentials like sweaters, jumpers, mufflers etc. Portable charger and camera batteries are also quite important. You can always buy anything you forget but you might not find the exact product you require or might not find it at all. Therefore, it is important to plan your itinerary in advance. This way, you know what you want to visit and how. One trick to planning a great itinerary would be to save all the sight-seeing spots for one day as most of them would be easy to cover and then keep the food and culture for evenings so that you can rest and enjoy.

● The North-eastern side of India is quite different from its other counterparts. Here, you will come across several borders and restricted zones that will ask for a permit. Therefore, it is essential to do your research well in advance and collect any information you can about all such areas. Having information about these permits will help you in that area and you won’t have to go back after having come so far. So, before you start dreaming about enjoying this abode of the clouds, book everything you will need a good while before the trip. Even before the accommodation, book your flight tickets, as there’s quite a rush and last-minute flight bookings are very expensive.

● Make a list of all possible experiences to make sure you don’t run out of money mid-way through the trip. Nobody enjoys the feeling of travelling so far and then not even experience everything they wanted to because they don’t have an expense to spare anymore. So, write down everything you might have to spend on and also everything you would want to spend on. Local shops in Meghalaya might not accept electronic money, so make sure to carry cash with you at all times. Also, be on a lookout for any ATM to retrieve more money if needed.

●Meghalayais a land of adventure sports and you will get a lot of opportunities to try one. Yet, it is necessary that you keep your safety in mind and take all he precautions required. Make sure you only take part in any sports after understanding all the rules from an expert. Get the training needed for a particular sport and ask for all the pros and cons before jumping in. Even during trekking, you can’t be too cautious as the area is slippery and hill stations are infamous for stones and twigs that could hurt you. Remember, your safety is in your hands.

● You can find luxury food wherever you go, but you need to keep an eye out for specialties. Part of the charm of any place you’re traveling is the never seen before cuisines they it has to offer. Since Manali is a hill station due to its colder climate many people just wanna enjoy it during the summer season which is of course the months of March to June. Then comes the monsoon which is absolutely stunning at places like these but isn't preferred for traveling cause of the blockages of national highways which are the months of July to September. Winter in Manali is the most thrilling time of year with constant snowfall and challenging weather but is preferred by youngsters for their backpacking trips because less number of tourists around which of course are the months of October to February.

Manali is 2050 meters above sea level; it is often called 'Goa of the north’. Now it wouldn't be a guided blog without me discussing the highlights of the town that must be visited.

Rohtang Pass

This mesmerizing tourist spot is one of the most famously scenic views of the Himalayan ranges covered with beautiful white snow. Rohtang pass is about 4000 meters above sea level and with the stunning views also comes the difficulty of breathing because of the lower partial pressure of oxygen in the environment which sounds scary but can be easily rectified by medication or just simple deep breathing exercises. Snowfall is year-round at Rohtang Pass so even if you visit Manali in summer when snowfall in the town has stopped you'll still be able to experience snow.

Many adventure sports are also conducted at Rohtang Pass like skiing and tubing.

Rohtang Pass is about 50 km from the Mall road of Manali and is a great place to spend at least 4-5 hours of your day preferably at the afternoon. Now talking about conveyance it is very to find for this spot considering its popularity, regular taxi services are available at different rates according to your needs.

Pandoh Dam

Surrounded by lush green sites the Pandoh Dam is one of the most hauntingly beautiful spots to visit at Manali. Birdwatching enthusiasts are also welcomed here by sitings of rare migrated birds who come here to take shelter here. This dam deserves a big shout for the must-visit places at Manali.

Hadimba Temple

Definitely a great place to visit by the religious people but also by others because this site isn't only a religious hotspot but also has the most mesmerizing views covered with very tall trees of the forest. As it is situated right by the beautiful Beas river this spot has a charm that no other can compete with. The inside of the temple is as peaceful as a temple should be you will be able to feel the healing vibes in the air along with the amazing aroma of incense. Places like these always have many legendary stories linked to them so I would suggest you talk to localities and find out if there is something you will be able to tell your friends back home when they ask you about yourManali trip.

Hamta Valley

Home to the famous Hampta trek, Hampta valley is again a very scenic spot. It is a little outside of the town of Manali but definitely worth visiting. To reach here you need to first go to the neighboring town of Prini from where is only 3 km away on the Kullu- Manali highway. You will be awestruck by nature once you reach here, it looks like a painting created by God.

These four sites are just here as teasers for our trip to Manali include these and much more interesting activities in the itinerary. Make sure you visit the piece of heaven on earth as soon as possible.

The sun is bright on top and it could even be considered hot by a lot of people. On the other hand, June welcomes the occasional rainfall but it is rare and not very heavy. This means that Kedarkantha is not really crowded and offers you enough isolation if that is that you are looking for. You will not find any snow in this season.

Kedarkantha in Autumn (September-November)

Fresh snowfall and cold days mark the entrance of the winter season in Kedarkantha. Starting at the end of December, the snow keeps falling till mid-February. The best part being that mid-January to February bring little crowd, leading to a quiet and pleasant trek. During peak winters, the trail might me blocked by snowfall for 2-3 days so be ready for that. But that is all a minor convenience in the face of a blanket of beautiful snow.

Ten Reasons Why You Can’t Miss the Kedarkantha Trek

The Kedarkantha trek is considered to be one of the best treks in India. Let’s look at 10 reasons why?

Sitting in the lap of Himalayas of Garhwal, Kedarkantha trekking tripis a treat for nature lovers. Once you reach the Kedarkantha Peak, don’t forget to see the sunrise from there. Trust us, waking up at the dawn would be worth it. The whole sky looks spectacular from this viewpoint, covered with rainbows of early morning hues and tints. From 1200 ft, the sunrise looks more magical and heavenly than anything and the cold Kedarkantha temperature adds to the whole vibe. Even if you’re not a believer this experience will make you believe in higher powers for that one moment.

· Kedarkantha is a paradise for snow fall lovers. If you want to play in the snow yet again or even if it is your first time seeing the snowfall, Kedarkanthawould be ideal to fulfill this dream of yours. As long as you visit Kedarkantha at the right time of the year, you will get to witness the whole place covered in a blanket of clean white snow. The months between December to March are the ideal months if you want to witness this scenery and enjoy the touch of the freezing water. You must look at the Kedarkantha Peak covered in snow for the best view.

· Throughout the Kedarkantha trekroute, you will come across several Himalayan Peaks such as Black Peak, Swargarohini peaks, Bandarponch, Gangotri ranges, and Draupadi ka Danda. With an altitude of 6,387 m, Black Peak is the highest peak in Garhwal Himalayas. These snow-covered peaks look spectacular from a distance. Even without that, there’s always something to admire in the near vicinity during this trek. A vast land of snow during the day and a sea of stars at night, this trek has got it all.

· Part of the charm of visiting new places is meeting new people. Trips that involve a long trek rarely give you a chance to interact with the locals and understand their culture. But Kedarkantha offers you a stay in homestays where you literally get the opportunity of living with the locals. You can eat their food with them, observe closely their style of living and understand their lifestyle. The homestays are situated in Gaichawan Gaon and will get the chance of living with these people on the first and last day of your trek. So don’t miss your chance by booking a hotel instead.

· The forests of Kedarkantha are not visited very often apart from yearly travelers and local villagers. This means that unlike forests in other places, Kedarkantha’s forests are not manicured and groomed for their visitor’s convenience. So, you get to experience the touch of the authenticity of nature. They are dense and never-ending making the whole trek magical. Also, the mix of deodar, oak and pine makes them full of variety and keeps you engaged with its diversity. But be careful as it is easy to get lost in these forests. Always stay close to your tour coach or a local villager.

· Kedarkantha has a lot of clearings on all sides, making it different from other treks where clearings are hard few and far to come. And even with so many clearings, every clearing is different from the other; While Khujey gives you the feel of camping hillside, Juda Ka Talab as its name suggests immerses you completely in its beautiful lake view. If we had to look for one common thing, it would be that the sunrise and sunsets from all these clearings look stunning. Since, the clearings and forests go hand in hand; you will have a feeling of completeness at the end of each trek.

· A lot of treks only have a single route which everyone has to follow. But Kedarkantha trekking has a lot of routes that you can choose from. Every route offers a different and more stunning view. You can also choose a trek depending on how crowded it will be. The more popular trek routes will obviously have more people on it, while there are quieter treks for people who enjoy trekking in peace. You will of course have to keep the Kedarkantha weather in mind while making this decision as some trek routes might become harder to cross due to heavy snowfall.

· Kedarkantha trekking tripis quite famous amongst travelers for its summit. A summit is the highest point of a mountain or hill top. A lot of treks treat a high point on a range or a pass as their final destination, but the Kedarkantha Trek has a proper marked mountain peak as its ending point. Plus, the elation you feel when you finally see the peak through the tree line is something else. A good destination point works wonderfully as a motivation for trekkers and helps them keep going. The fact that the height of this summit aka the Kedarkantha height is 12,500 ft makes it even better.

· Every other stop on the Kedarkantha Trek is associated with some kind of mythological story, especially the elusive Kedarkantha Temple. Whether you believe in them or not, these stories do add a lot more to the experience and genuinely makes you wonder whether there is some truth to the legend. Juda ka talab, the most peaceful place of the whole trek also has a famous legend attached to it. Apparently, Lord Shiva loosened one of his hair strands leading to water flowing out from it. All the water released from the strand formed a small lake, Juda Ka Talab.

· Kedarkantha is considered to be one of the best treks for beginners. As long as you are physically fit; which is anyway a requirement for every trek, Kedarkantha trek will be perfect for your first time. It is considered an easy to moderate trek route and has all the bells and whistles to make the journey fun for first timers. The Kedarkantha best time would be in winters because of the stunning view it provides.

Hindus make up for the largest minority in this state with an 11. 52% while Muslims are a mere 4. 39%. The reason for this majority is colonization. British India started converting indigenous tribes into Christians in the 19thcentury. Presbyterians and Catholics are the most common denominations present in Meghalaya today.

●Did you know that Hindi is taught as an option subject in Meghalaya? You heard it right! Schools in Meghalaya; private, government or religious institutions only teach the students in English language. All the other languages of India like Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Garo, Khasi, Mizo, Nepali, and Urdu are taught as optional subjects. To regulate the matters of education in the state, the Meghalaya Board of School Education was setup in 1973. This board is majorly responsible for conducting the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Exams.

●Meghalaya is an agrarian economy which means the economy of Meghalaya is based upon growing crops and maintaining farmland. Almost 10% of the land in this state is under cultivation on which the 80% of their population survives. One would think that the people of this state would be experts in the subject of Agriculture. But that is not the case! People here make a limited use of modern techniques and therefore yield poor results and low productivity. Due to this a total of 12% of the state population is below poverty line and the state still imports food from other Indian states.

●In 2018 it was discovered that Meghalaya has the largest sandstone in the world. A 25-day expedition later, scientists found a 24,583-meter-long canal in a cave. It is home to dinosaur fossils as old as 70 million years and you have to crawl through the cave to explore it. This sandstone is situated in the village of Laitsohum in the Mawsynram. Earlier this title belonged to Cueva El Samán in Venezuela but the Meghalaya cave is 6,000 meters longer than this. Meghalaya has 1,650 caves in total out of which only 1,000 have been explored so far.

●Jhum farming has been an age-old tradition in the Northeastern India including Meghalaya. It involves the process of slashing or burning a patch of forest land destroying dried trees, shrubs and bushes. It is done under the belief that this improves soil quality. Although, in recent times this practice has become a threat to the natural biodiversity of the state as many dense patches of land have been lost because of it. It has become a significant problem in Meghalaya especially as most people depend on agriculture for their livelihood.

●Meghalaya has one of the largest eco-tourism circuits in India and therefore, benefits a lot from it. A large part of the state’s economy thrives on Meghalaya tourism. Due to the many adventure sports like mountaineering, rock climbing, trekking, and hiking, spelunking and water sports this state has to offer; it is a hit amongst Meghalaya tourist. How to prepare for Kedarkantha Trek

If you’re looking to trek in the beautiful Himalayas, Kedarkantha trek is one of the best options out there. Situated in Uttarakhand, this trek is most famous for its Kedarkantha Temple. The trek starts at Sankri and moving in a circular route end their only. Especially for first time trekkers, Kedarkantha trekroute is easy to trek in and only 25kms in total which is still easier than a lot of other trekking routes. But before you start dreaming of the mountain beauty, let us prepare you with some dos and don’ts to make your trek easier.

●The best time to go for Kedarkantha Trek is from the months of December to February. Since it is the winter season, the trek route is filled with snow. In the monsoon season, the snow is still falling which can be risky for the trekkers therefore, avoid visiting Kedarkantha in the monsoon seasons completely.

●Avoid taking food items that will generate any kind of waste. If you do take something that creates trash for you to throw, do not litter the beautiful mountains. Instead, keep the trash with you during the journey and throw it in the dustbin once you reach the hotel. As trekkers it is our responsibility to keep the place, we are visiting clean.

●Try to carry food items that are light for your gut. Anything heavy will slow you down and make you lethargic. You might even get sick if the food item doesn’t suit you. So light snacks like peanuts, dry fruits, bananas, chocolates, biscuits, oranges, apples and jiggery are better recommended for a trek like this.

●Team work is essential in a trek like this. You take care of others when they need it and they will take care of you when you need it. As a responsible trekker listen to all the instructions given by your guide carefully and help your fellow trekkers by keeping them motivated to keep going. Remember, this is not a competition!

●Do not make it difficult for your leader or team. Trekking is hard enough without somebody not listening to their leader and following the rules that have been given. Wake up on time, and do not get separated from your team while trekking. A leader’s word is final so don’t argue because they definitely know better than you.

●Stay hydrated during the Kedarkantha trekking tripbut do not over drink either. Don’t keep drinking water while walking as that could make you sick. Stop for minute before you take a sip. Do not forget to fill your water bottle whenever you get a chance as there are only a limited number of streams you will see during this trek.

●Good pair of shoes is a must for a trek like this. You don’t have to spend a fortune on sports shoes just make sure that whatever shoes you are wearing don’t have a slippery tendency to them. As long as they have a strong hold, you’ll be fine. You can also buy shoes at Sankri for Rs 300 and they are said to be pretty good for a trek like this.

●Do not forget to keep a lot of cash on hand before starting your trip. Kedarkantha doesn’t have any ATMs nearby so it is better if you carry cash wherever you go. Since there’s a network problem in the mountains don’t think about making digital transactions. They might not go through or people might not even have Paytm or Gpay.

●Woolen clothes are a must in the mountain areas, especially if you’re going there in winters. Temperature in Kedarkantha is quite low. Sweaters, jackets, mufflers, gloves, atleast a pair of socks for each day are a necessity. Mountains are cold at all times so even if you’re travelling in summers atleast carry light woolens for your own protection from cold.

●Even with cold weather, the sun can be quite strong in these regions therefore don’t forget to carry items for protection from sunlight. Sunglasses, sunscreen lotion with enough SPF, lip balm, etc. A windproof jacket is also recommended as winds can be quite harsh in hilly regions especially in monsoons.

●Carry a box of medications with any medicines you might need. Even if you don’t have any health issues carry medicines for possibilities like headache, stomach ache, altitude sickness etc. Also carry general first aid stuff like band aids, Volini spray, Dettol for cut and scrapes etc. as you are more prone to get hurt in these areas.

●Trekking poles, trekking bags and trekking shoes can all be arranged from Sankri but you will have to book them in advance. Especially in peak season all the trekking stuff is booked very quickly so do not leave it on last minute to book these things. Also book your hotel in advance too as you might not get last minute accommodation.

●Carry your identity card and some photo copies everywhere you go. You won’t be allowed entry in certain places without that. Also carry your camera everywhere to click pictures of this beautiful Kedarkantha trekking trip. Don’t forget extra batteries, memory card and charger so that you can click as many pictures as you like.

●BSNL is the only network that works in these regions so buy a separate BSNL sim card for this trip. Don’t forget to carry your charger with you. Also, if possible, buy a power bank for this trip as electricity is a problem in these regions and you might not get a lot of chances to charge your phone as and when you want.

●Lastly, pack light and smart. Carry everything that is necessary but don’t carry extra luggage just for the sake of it. The heavier your burden is the more you will find it difficult to pick up speed while trekking. You don’t want to get tired in the first 20 minutes of your trek due to a heavy luggage.

We hope this list helps you plan your Kedarkantha trekking tripwith much more ease. Have a safe trip and don’t forget your mask for these hard times!

Interesting Facts About Kedarnath You Must Know

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is an enigma in itself. With many mythological and real-life stories attached to the place, it is always interesting to find more about it and have a Trip to Kedarnath. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting facts about Kedarnath.

●A huge amount of rain flooded the Kedarnath on June 2013. The Kedarnath flood was so severe that the bank of Chorabari Lake came down destroying everything that came its way. Around 5,000 people were missing or lost their lives, a huge chunk of which were pilgrims from around the world. Only the Kedarnath templesurvived this day of disaster as a huge rock diverted the flow to the sides of the temple. Even years after this incident, search operations are held to find more and more skeletons in this holy place. The last such operation was held in 2020.

●The Kedarnath Temple remains closed for visitors for 6 months every year. Due to heavy rainfall, and harsh weather conditions, it is not safe for pilgrims to have a Kedarnath Trip. Even the locals living there move to a safer destination. Almost 360 families are dependent on the town of Kedarnath for their livelihood but they move to nearby villages in the winter season. It is closed on Bhaiduj, happening a day after Diwali and reopens on Akshaya Tritiya in the month of April or May. The statue of Lord Shiva is carried away to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukthimath near Guptrishi for safety purposes.

●The management of Kedarnath Temple comes under the Uttar Pradesh State Government Act No. 30/1948 as Act no. 16,1939. It is called Shri Badrinath or Shri Kedarnath Mandir Act. In 2002, this act was modified to include government officials. Now the Kedarnath Temple board has 17 members, 10 of which are selected by the government of Uttarakhand. The four districts of Kedarnath select one member each. Chief priest Rawal and 3 other priests are also a part of this board. A Chief Executive Officer has been appointed to carry out the orders given by the state government of Uttarakhand.

●Legend has it that the Pandavas built the Kedarnath Temple after the great epic Mahabharat. Since they felt guilty for shedding the blood of their own brothers, they wanted to atone for their sins. They were trying to find Lord Shiva to ask for forgiveness. But not wanting to forgive them Lord Shiva hid inGuptrashi. When Bheem found him anyway, hiding in the form of a bull, Lord Shiva disappeared scattering himself in 5 different places Kedarnath, Rudranath, Tungnath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. Those are now known as the Panch Kedar. Lord Shiva did forgive them in the end though!

●Did you know that the Bhairavnath Temple is situated quite near to the Kedarnath Temple in the Himalayan regions? Bhairon Baba also known as Kshetrapal (guardian of the region), is one of the many avatars of Lord Shiva. It is believed that he protects the Temple from human and natural calamities and evil spirits. It is also believed that it is him who protects the town during the winter months when the weather is at its worth in Kedarnath. Bhairavnath Temple is just 500 meters from Kedarnath Temple on foot and Kedarnath Tour Package offers a great view of the entire Kedarnath valley.

●The priests who perform the rituals in the Kedarnath Temple belong to the Rawal community of Karnataka. The same rituals and mantras are being repeated since the 10th Century AD. All these mantras are chanted in the Kannada language by the priest. The head priest of the temple does not perform these rituals instead giving this opportunity to his assistants. The Kedarnath Temple has five head priests and the title of head priest is offered to them by rotation. When the statue of Lord Shiva is moved to Omkareshwar Temple, the priests relocate with it. Both for devotion and for their own safety.

●Late actor Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan starrer Kedarnath was shot around the Kedarnath Temple. This movie was based on the Kedarnath floods that took thousands of lives in 2013. This was Khan’s debut film. The priests of Kedarnath wanted the censor board to ban the film as they believed it promoted love jihad and made fun of Hindu sentiments. From government officials to comman man, many other people also demanded a ban on it. Of course later the film was released anyway as the court dismissed that and many other cases filed against the film.

●Located at the south of Kedarnath Temple, Udak Kund is believed to have great spiritual significance. Devotees say that whoever drinks the holy water of Udak Kund will forever be freed from the repetitive cycle of birth and death. This water is believed to have purification abilities and it also poured on the statue of Lord Shiva situated in the Kedarnath Temple. According to Kedar Khand of Shiv Purana, the water of Udak Kund is a mixture of all five oceans. Not just Udak Khand the water of a lot of holy rivers in India is used for purification purposes.

●Some places have hi, some places say namaste; in Kedarnath people will always greet you with Jai kedar or Jai Shri Kedar. The devotion and belief in an eternal power is so strong in the people of Kedarnath that even their greetings are a reflection of that very belief. Even the celebrations in this town are mostly God related, with Janmashtami being celebrated with a huge fan fair. The influence of western culture is minimum in this holy land as most locals choose to devote their time and attention to their work and prayers. Only vegetarian food is served here.

●Ghee is considered holy in the Kedarnath Temple and is applied on the Lingam during prayers. But when the Archeological Survey of India visited the temple to inspect and restore it after the Kedarnath Floods they warned against. Since the stones are not cleaned of the ghee that is applied, the ghee is rotting and choking the stones of their natural breathing ability. Many engravings in the temple have already been damaged due to the ghee applied on them every day. Due to the acidic reaction from the ghee layer, the stone is turning to power at an alarming pace.

We hope these interesting facts makes you more excited and helps you plan your Kedarnath Tour Package with much more ease. Have a safe trip and don’t forget your mask for these hard times!
